The 5 Best Minimal Effort Money Making Apps

We all want to make more money. With adulting and all the responsibilities that go along with it, it can be hard to find the time for a side hustle not to mention if you have a demanding job or a family. This article is going to focus on apps you can use to make money with minimal effort. I mean if you can’t make money watching Netflix then is it even worth doing? (kidding). Unlike other money-making app lists, this one is focused exclusively on apps that allow you to make money while sitting on your couch.

1. Rakuten

Formerly known as EBates this is one of the most popular apps for earning money while you shop. What is Rakuten? Rakuten is a service that gives you cashback for shopping through their affiliated stores. They have deals with thousands of retailers and offer discounts or cash back when you shop with them ranging from 2% to 30% cashback with most receiving on average around 6% back.

It is not a scam. Rakuten makes their money through affiliate marketing where the retailers are paying Rakuten to bring them new business. They make a commission and you get a deal, it’s a win-win. Once you make a purchase through your store of choice, expect to receive the cash back in your Rakuten account within seven days. Once the cash has been in the account for 60 days, you will get paid on the 15thof February, May, August and November or 4 times a year.

Tip: Before you go shopping, see if there are any deals with Rakuten first. You might be surprised. They also have deals for offline cashback, meaning you don’t have to shop online to get a deal or cashback. If you link your credit card to your Rakuten account and buy something in store that is offering a deal, the cash back will be posted to your Rakuten account. It’s that easy!

2. Swagbucks

Swagbucks is an app that pays you for answering short surveys, watching entertaining videos, play games, browse the internet, shop online, and more on your mobile device. It’s free to join and only takes a few minutes to set up your account. You’ll earn points which can be redeemed for gift cards at major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Starbucks to name a few, or cash at a rate of one penny per point or $1 per 100 Swagbucks. You get a better conversion if you redeem them for gift cards however, some offering 13% off. Here are the different ways you can earn money:

Swagbucks Discover

The easiest way to earn points is to look out for specific promotions where you get cashback for shopping at stores you already shop at online. For example, if you’re buying something on Amazon, you can earn up to 3% cashback. This applies to other websites too like and Expedia so keep an eye out.

Swagbucks offers coupons and deals to help you save money at stores while giving you Swagbucks for each coupon you use. If you need something, may as well see if they have a coupon to use.

Another way to earn points fast is to watch their videos. The beauty of this is you don’t need to physically watch it, it only needs to play in the background. This means you can literally be watching Netflix while you make money. Expect to earn up to 500 points per day by watching videos. Categories of videos include entertainment, home, travel, and games.

Take Surveys

To earn 500 points takes between 20 to 30 minutes so you can rack up the points fairly fast. Note: This would be the equivalent to earning $10 per hour so might be best to do if you have spare time to kill.

Note: You won’t get rich by using this app. Realistically expect to earn a $50 gift card or two per month with regular use but that’s better than nothing!

3. Foap

Foap is a stock photography website that allows photographers to upload their photos and videos they have taken with their smartphone and sell them. Brands, agencies, and the general public will be able to view them, and if they so choose, purchase them to be used for their advertising campaigns. The price you get for each image that is sold is $10, with 50% going to Foap, and 50% going to you. All you need to do to get started is to download the app and register.

The best part is you can sell your photo more than once, so if you have a popular photo, expect it to be purchased multiple times. Pay attention to the keyword as having the right keyword can have a big impact on who discovers your photo. Payment is made at the end of each month and there is no withdrawal limit.

On top of their regular offering, you can also sign up for missions that pay $100 each. Missions are contests created by companies that are looking for a specific photo and it’s free to enter.

I’m not a photographer myself, but you can expect to make $50 or more a month by using this app.

4. Slidejoy

This is only for Android users, but you can make on average $5 to $15 a month for putting ads on your device. Every time you check your phone, you’ll see an ad with a news story or promotion. You can learn more about it, see another ad, or swipe it away to use your phone as normal. You don’t receive more money for looking at more ads so you’re essentially making money for doing nothing.

5. Healthy Wage

Being into fitness myself, I love this app. Healthy Wage is an app that will pay you cash for achieving your health and fitness goals. You’ll first enter how much weight you want to lose (10 to 150 pounds, minimum 10% of your starting weight), how long you’ll take (six to 18 months) and how much you want to bet ($20 to $150 a month). The calculator then determines your prize amount, up to $10,000. You’ll start the challenge with a video-recorded weigh-in, log weekly weigh-ins, and then at the end, record another weigh-in on video. If you beat your challenge you’ll make money with how much dependent on the original bet.

While none of the apps will make you rich, you can earn over $100 a month with minimal effort. $100 a month may not seem like a lot, but if you invest that into the S&P 500 index fund, you can expect to have around $186,000 over 30 years. Not bad for doing nothing. Every dollar counts so download those apps and make some money.
